“September 9 is a significant day in Africa. On this day, the Organization of African Unity resolutely passed the torch to the African Union. Today, on this very day in 2024, we are illuminated by the splendor of the Leo Tolstoy Prize ceremony. It is gratifying that the inaugural award is going to Africa. We accept it with immense gratitude,” said Musa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
The Second International Leo Tolstoy Peace Prize was awarded for an outstanding personal contribution to securing peace and stability in the Central Asian region, fostering good-neighbourly relations, and bringing to a close long-standing border disputes conducted on the principles of mutual respect. The signing of the Treaty on the State Border and the Khujand Declaration of Eternal Friendship set a historic precedent, in which the political will of the leaders of the three countries transformed a potentially conflict-prone region into a space of cooperation and trust.

“I consider this honor to be a recognition of our shared political will, aimed at resolving the most important issues of constructive cooperation between our countries on the basis of dialogue and trust,” said Emomali Rahmon, President of Tajikistan.

“This award is a symbol of our commitment to the timeless ideals of humanism championed by the Russian writer and thinker Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy. I view receiving this award as recognition of our joint contribution to transforming Central Asia into a region of peace, prosperity, and creativity,” said Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan.
