38th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa

The 38th African Union (AU) Summit was held in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, on February 15-16, 2025, which brought together the heads of State and Government of the association's members, as well as heads of international organizations.
The meeting addressed a number of regional and international issues, including socio-economic development, AU institutional reforms, and Africa's growing role on the global stage. In addition, a new Chairman of the African Union Commission was elected. He became the Foreign Minister of Djibouti, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf. Musa Faki Mahamat, a representative of Chad, previously held this position for eight years.
During the summit, a ceremony was also held to transfer the presidency of the AU from the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, to the leader of Angola,J oaoLawrence.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the event. He noted that Africa is a region with an enterprising young population and huge potential in the field of renewable resources. Guterres added that the African Continental Free Trade Area is an important catalyst for the continent's economic development. "We must continue to work together to implement the African Union's 2063 Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The key areas that can contribute to progress are clean energy, transformation of food systems and digitalization" – Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General.
Among the participants of the summit were South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli, who confirmed Egypt's willingness to cooperate within the framework of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM, a mechanism for evaluating and improving the management, political and economic practices of the AU member States).
In turn, the Ethiopian side proposed to hold the second African Climate Summit at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa in 2025. Ethiopian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mesganu Arga, speaking at a meeting of the Committee of Heads of State and Government of African Countries on Climate Change, said that the summit could become an important platform for developing a strategy for climate negotiations in Africa and developing the necessary measures for sustainable development.
The African Union was formed in 2002. The organization includes 55 States of the continent.
The first International Lev Tolstoy Peace Prize was awarded to the African Union on September 9, 2024.
