On August 1, 2025, on the Day of Remembrance of Russian Soldiers Killed in the First World War of 1914-1918, a delegation of the Russian Historical Society, led by Chairman Sergey Naryshkin, laid a wreath and flowers at the Obelisk to the Fallen in the World War of 1914-1918.
The ceremony was held at the Memorial and Park Complex of the Heroes of the First World War, where the Moscow City Brotherhood Cemetery was located from 1915 to 1932, and where about 18,000 people were buried, including soldiers, officers, doctors, and nurses who died during the war.
"On August 1, 1914, Russia was forced to enter the First World War in order to protect the brotherly Serbian people. The Russian side's repeated calls for negotiations were unsuccessful, as the leaders of Germany and Austria-Hungary were eager to initiate a global military conflict.
More than a million Russian soldiers and officers died on the fronts of the First World War. At the same time, both the tsarist government and the opposition failed to protect the country from a deep political crisis. The Revolution and the Civil War overshadowed the First World War in the national memory, and it became a great but forgotten war for many years, almost a century. However, on the eve of the centenary of the First World War, in 2013, we worked together to restore the connection between the past and the present. According to the Law of the Russian Federation, August 1 is a commemorative day for Russian soldiers who died on the battlefields of World War I," Sergey Naryshkin emphasized.
