According to D.G. Zavgaev, the Tolstoy Prize was established on June 22, 2022. The founders were the Russian Historical Society, the Russian Military Historical Society and the Russian Peace Foundation. The prize is awarded for activities aimed at promoting peace and international cooperation, for attracting the wider international community to the cause of world peace, as well as for achieving charitable, cultural and educational goals, including promoting a positive perception of Russia in the world.
The international jury consists of prominent public figures from different continents, who are widely known and have high moral authority, who have proved themselves in upholding the ideas of peace and cooperation between peoples. These are Maria Victoria Alcaraz, professor at the University of Buenos Aires, Oleg Gaidukevich, deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, Lindiwe Susulu, member of the national Executive Committee of the African National Congress, Pierre de Gaulle, grandson of the former President of France and founder of the Foundation for Peace and Friendship between Peoples, and other public and political figures. There are 9 people in total, citizens of the BRICS, SCO and G20 countries. The chairman of the jury is Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director and General Director of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theaters.
According to Doku Zavgaev, the prize awarded to the laureate includes, among other things, a personalized gold medal, which is manufactured at the Moscow Mint. Last year, the African Union, an intergovernmental organization comprising 55 countries of the African continent, became the first laureate. The award ceremony was held at the Bolshoi Theatre on September 9, the writer's birthday.
