ETERNAL FLAME AS A SYMBOL OF MEMORY ABOUT THE GREAT FEAT OF THE SOVIET PEOPLE

On the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, when, in honor of the anniversary, 80 memorials of our soldiers from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok lit an Eternal flame from a particle of flame burning at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin Wall, We would like to recall the first such action jointly conducted by the Russian Historical Society and the Russian Embassy in Slovenia a few years ago.
On September 1, 2019, on the day of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, on the initiative of the Russian diplomatic mission and the Russian Historical Society (RIO), a solemn ceremony of lighting the Eternal Flame was organized at the monument to the Sons of Russia and the Soviet Union who died on Slovenian soil during the First and Second World Wars, which was opened President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in 2016.
The mass event caused a huge international response. The Eternal Flame was lit for the first time in Slovenia, for the first time in the last three decades – abroad, in one of the European member states of the European Union and NATO, for the first time - from a particle of flame of the Eternal Flame at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin Wall.

A high-level Russian delegation led by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma P.O. Tolstoy took part in the celebrations.
It consisted of members of the RIO Presidium, representatives of the Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Culture, the Samara Region, the Russian Military Historical Society, the Russian Union of Veterans, and the All-Russian public movement Volunteers of Victory.
The transportation and lighting of the Eternal Flame were carried out with the participation of the Russian honor guard.
On behalf of the Slovenian side, the head of the State Council, A. Kovshca, and the Mayor of Ljubljana, Z.Jankovic, Head of the Association of Patriotic and Veteran Organizations of Slovenia, General A. Steiner. High–level representatives of official authorities, a number of ministries and departments, cities and municipalities, influential veterans' organizations, the Slovenia-Russia Friendship Society, Russian compatriots and local residents from various regions of the country were present. By agreement of the Russian diplomatic mission and the Slovenian Ministry of Defense, a Slovenian guard of honor was lined up at the monument, and a local military band performed the anthems of the two countries.
On the day of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, against the backdrop of a propaganda campaign already being waged by the West to distort the prerequisites and causes of the bloodiest conflict in human history that broke out in 1939, a mass memorial event organized by the Embassy and RIO in Ljubljana drew special attention to the monument to our soldiers, which, as the President of the Russian Federation V.Vladimir Putin, on the day of its opening, "recalls the decisive contribution of the Soviet Union to the liberation of Europe from Nazism, reflects our principled position on the inadmissibility of attempts to distort and rewrite history, to justify crimes that led to the deaths of millions of people."
The Eternal Flame Relay in Slovenia project implemented by the Embassy and RIO ended on September 20, 2019 with a solemn ceremony of lighting the Eternal Flame in the city of Murska Sobota at the Memorial of Soviet Soldiers who fell in April 1945 in battles with the Fascist invaders for the liberation of Prekmurje, located in the north-east of the Slovenian region.
The mass event was attended by high-level delegations from Russia and Slovenia, the leadership and members of veteran and other public organizations, compatriots, the media, the Slovenian guard of honor and a military band. For the first time, at the invitation of the organizers, the ceremony at the monument to the Soviet soldiers-liberators was attended by participants of the scientific conference "The Role of the partisan Movement in accelerating the defeat of fascism" from Russia, Slovenia and 10 other European countries, which was organized with the participation of the Russian diplomatic mission and RIO at the site of the International World War II Research Center in Maribor, established in 2017 (Slovenia).
And today, in a difficult geopolitical situation, under the conditions of the official Slovenian authorities' unfriendly policy towards our country, the Eternal Flame at the monument to the Sons of Russia and the Soviet Union in Ljubljana is still burning, the International World War II Research Center in Maribor continues its scientific and educational activities, bringing the truth about the crimes of Nazism to the public. and about the decisive contribution that the Soviet people made to the Great Victory, recalling the fighting brotherhood of the Red Army and the Yugoslav partisans during the difficult years of the joint struggle against the brown plague.
